Deep Discourse [DVD/CD/Facilitator’s Guide]
Expanding on the book Deep Discourse: A Framework for Cultivating Student-Led Discussions, this video workshop shows real students and real classrooms in action. Authors Sandi Novak and Cara Slattery assert teachers are doing too much talking in classrooms. In order for students to develop critical-thinking, problem-solving, and self-directed learning skills, students themselves must lead classroom discussions. In Deep Discourse: Facilitating Student-Led Discussions, workshop participants will see teachers providing focus lessons, conferring with students, and offering feedback to advance students’ progress toward student-led discussions. This workshop provides participants with the opportunity to engage in discussions as learners in order to understand the framework for student-led discussions that leads students to rich conversations about important content.
K-12 teachers and administrators can view Deep Discourse: Facilitating Student-Led Discussions alone or with the facilitator’s guide to provide one full-day workshop or two half-day workshops. It includes eight segments totalling sixty-eight minutes in length on DVD, a PowerPoint presentation on CD, and a fifty-six-page facilitator’s guide in print and on CD.
This workshop is divided into eight segments: Welcome and opening; student-led discussion framework; the environment for student talk; learning targets; planning and implementation; student talk versus deep discourse; lesson progressions; and, reflection.
