Awaken the Learner
Finding the Source of Effective Education
Awaken the Learner: Finding the Source of Effective Education is a collaboration between Darrell Scott (founder of Rachel’s Challenge) and Robert J. Marzano (founder of Marzano Research Laboratory). In part I, Darrell Scott describes the terrible day in 1999 when his daughter Rachel was shot and killed at Columbine High School. Rachel’s death led him to create Rachel’s Challenge, which brought him into contact with millions of students and thousands of educators and gave him unique insights about education in the United States. In part II, Robert J. Marzano explains a model of cognition, motivation and engagement that empowers students to understand and control their emotions and decisions. He gives teachers, schools and districts concrete guidance about how to create a curriculum that both instructs and awakens students. Together the authors outline an approach that combines instruction and inspiration to create a coherent, compassionate direction for education.
