Thelma Perso’s career spans a diverse range of roles making her an expert in mathematics, numeracy, school improvement and school leadership. For eighteen years Thelma was a classroom teacher of mathematics in large secondary schools in remote, rural and urban in Western Australia, and head of department for eight of those years. During that time she completed a master’s degree and PhD in mathematics education. Following this she became the senior curriculum officer (mathematics F–12) with the Department of Education in WA. She has held a series of positions in other Australian states, including executive director of curriculum in Queensland, executive director of education in Central Australia and executive director of a literacy and numeracy taskforce in the Northern Territory. Thelma is now the chief education officer at Swan Christian Education Association which includes seven schools in the Perth metropolitan area.
She has also taught in a range of universities including Edith Cowan, Notre Dame and Curtin University of Technology, and was a senior research officer for several years at the Centre for Child Development and Education at the Menzies School of Health research. She was awarded an Australian postgraduate research award which she used to research students’ misconceptions in algebra (her PhD research area) and a Churchill Fellowship to investigate Indigenous numeracy overseas. Thelma has also contributed in voluntary roles including past president of the Mathematics Association of Western Australia (MAWA) where she is also a life member, and past president of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT).
In 2008, she was selected as a member of the Prime Minister’s panel and co-author of the National numeracy review report. She authored Teaching Indigenous students with Professor Colleen Hayward (Allen & Unwin, 2015) as well as wrote and edited over thirty books for teachers and a multitude of peer-reviewed papers.
