Katherine Gillies is the lead architect of school- and district-wide literacy improvement work at Niles North High School in Illinois. Her 14 years in education have also included roles as an English teacher and literacy coach.
Katherine’s experience includes building a comprehensive system of intervention and support for struggling readers, authoring a number of research-based curricula to ensure the continued literacy growth of all students (Tiers I, II, and III), and organising a schoolwide summer reading program.
She currently leads a number of professional learning communities and cross-curricular initiatives aimed at using data to inform instruction and foster student growth, as well as building capacity for disciplinary literacy – including a multigrade core literacy skill sequence. On these topics, Katherine has presented at the local and national level.
Katherine is passionate about creating a collaborative environment where teachers feel supported, connected and empowered to grow students’ basic, intermediate and disciplinary literacy skills. She has collaborated extensively with Chicago Area Literacy Leaders (CALL).
Katherine earned bachelor’s degrees in English and secondary English education from Saint Louis University, a master’s degree in education and a reading specialist certification from the University of Illinois-Chicago, and a master’s degree in education from Concordia University.
